Description

The Department of General Services, Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Principal Scientist in the Immunology/Virology (IV) laboratory. The selected candidate will be responsible for technical oversight of testing to support infectious disease investigations of public health significance, conducted by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). The Principal Scientist will oversee and execute a variety of serological methodologies for identification of antibodies to infectious agents as well as virus isolation and identification of viral antigens, including influenza and rabies viruses. Testing methodologies include virus isolation and antigen identification by direct and indirect fluorescence antibody (DFA & IFA) assays. Serological assays include Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISAs), Microsphere Immunoassays (MIAs), agglutination assays and other Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA) techniques. Testing methodologies also include nucleic acid isolation as well as standard and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing.

The candidate will be primarily involved with development and validation of new test methods, be responsible for performing and developing QA/QC procedures, maintaining accurate records and maintenance of equipment. In addition, duties will include daily weekly and monthly tracking and summaries of test findings to rapidly communicate the data to key management, senior leadership and public health officials to ensure data is available to make effective public health decisions.  This Principal Scientist position will be required to provide technical supervision, QA guidance and training to staff.

Weekend and after-hours work will be required during emergency testing events.  

Blood-borne pathogen training will be provided by the employer.  

This employee will be required to receive the rabies vaccine and to work a rotating on-call schedule as part of the DCLS rabies testing team.
 

Note: 
 The selected candidate for this position may be required to perform other COVID-19 duties as assigned to assist the agency during the pandemic emergency as declared by the Governor.  These duties may include assisting with automated testing, result reporting and specimen retention.

Requirements

The applicant must meet the following minimal qualifications: 
  • Meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) requirements for testing personnel in a high complexity testing laboratory as defined by 42 CFR 493.1449.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and work related experience with the theory and application of chemical and/or biological principles. 
  • Ability to work well in a fast paced environment and ability to work well on a team.
  • Advanced skills and experience in the application and operation of complex laboratory equipment and systems necessary in the analysis of samples/specimens. 
  • Advanced experience and ability to independently perform highly complex and unusual analysis. 
  • Ability to compile and formulate complex data and to draw independent conclusions and provide interpretations of data. 
  • Skills and ability to plan, organize and implement independent research projects
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in order to provide consultation to customers relating to specimen submission, specimen testing and/or interpretation of results.
  • Knowledge of laboratory training and competency assessment.
  • Skills and ability to plan, organize and conduct formal technical trainings for internal and external professionals in field of expertise.
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills






Preferred work related skills and experience include the following: 
  • Experience performing high throughput Polymerase Chain Reaction (standard and real-time testing).
  • Experience working in an immunology or virology laboratory.
  • Knowledge and experience with computerized laboratory information management systems, spreadsheets, MS Office products, and laboratory software programs.
  • Experience with the writing of grant applications and progress reports and ability to provide written reports of research findings/interpretations.
  • Experience performing EIA, MIA, agglutination procedures.
  • Experience with nucleic acid extraction.
  • Experience with chain of custody procedures.
  • Experience with development and validation of new methods.
  • Experience serving as a team leader with the ability to prioritize, schedule and coordinate the laboratory testing of others.
  • Knowledge and experience with CLIA regulations and audits.
  • Experience working in a BSL-3 laboratory.

The selected candidate must pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check.
 
DCLS employees are designated as essential personnel. This designation requires DCLS employees to report to the workplace or at an assigned remote location during state authorized closings or delays (i.e. weather-related closures/delays, holidays, etc.), unless otherwise instructed by management.
