Description

The Idaho Bureau of Laboratories is recruiting for a full-time permanent Clinical Laboratory Inspector position.

This position will complete a team of two surveyors. Fifty percent of this position will involve inspecting clinical laboratories to ensure compliance with federal regulations under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and state regulations. The other fifty percent of this position will involve monitoring quality assurance (QA) compliance and implementing the quality management (QM) plan for the state laboratory. We are seeking candidates who have in-depth knowledge of clinical laboratory science and current standards of practice. Applicants who have experience ensuring compliance in clinical laboratories are encouraged to apply.
This position will not involve shift work and will be scheduled to work during regular business hours. This position requires intermittent statewide travel between twenty and forty percent of work time, including overnight stays, which are scheduled ahead of time to accommodate the surveyor.

Example of Duties

  • Conducts on-site inspections of laboratories to determine eligibility for federal CLIA certification and state registration
  • Reviews staff qualifications, laboratory procedures and records covering pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic stages of specimen testing
  • Interprets and applies federal and state rules, regulations, and guidelines
  • Prepares written reports of findings detailing deficiencies including entry into federal data systems
  • Evaluates facility plans of correction for cited deficiencies for compliance with federal regulations
  • Schedules follow-up or enforcement action as necessary
  • Evaluates proficiency test results for compliance with federal and state requirements
  • Provides professional consultation with and advises laboratories on regulation interpretation and development of plans of correction
  • Provide quality assurance guidance and monitoring for the Idaho Bureau of Laboratories (IBL)
  • Update and write CLIA-related quality assurance documents for IBL
  • Provide quality assurance guidance and monitoring to IBL’s chemistry team for EPA compliance


Requirements

  • Good knowledge of principles and application of clinical laboratory science; principles and laboratory testing techniques of immunology, serology, clinical chemistry, immunohematology, hematology and microbiology; quality control techniques in clinical laboratories.  Requires completion of a bachelor’s degree or higher in medical technology, or in a related chemical, physical, or biological science field; AND at least one year of work experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Experience performing clinical laboratory testing in a variety of testing categories; accurately recording examination observations and writing technical laboratory reports; interpreting and applying laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to clinical laboratories.
  • Experience making oral presentations before groups.
