JOB DESCRIPTION

The CDC Foundation seeks candidates for a Bioinformatician position to provide bioinformatics support for global molecular surveillance, tool development, and special studies to monitor the existing and emerging strains, improve pathogen detection and characterization, and advance our understanding of bacterial meningitis pathogens.

This position is for 12 months with the possibility to renew based on funding and performance.

The position will be hired by the CDC Foundation and assigned to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Clifton campus in Atlanta, Georgia. This full-time, 40-hours a week position will be located at the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) within the Bacterial Meningitis Laboratory (BML) of the Meningitis and Vaccine Preventable Diseases (MVPD) Branch. However, the position will require teleworking until offices re-open. This is an outstanding opportunity to work with the nation’s lead agency charged with protecting the public's health. Main Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal and external partners and team members to provide bioinformatics support for global molecular surveillance and outbreak response for bacterial meningitis through effective data management and analysis as well as developing effective bioinformatic and informatic tools and systems.
  • Collaborate with partners to strengthen global meningitis genome partnership (GMGP) and provide technical assistance and trainings to improve the understanding of molecular surveillance and sequencing
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners as well as team members to provide bioinformatics support for special studies to understand carriage, pathogen biology, virulence, microbiome profiles, and vaccine antigens and improve pathogen detection and characterization through developing and implementing cutting-edge bioinformatic tools
  • Prepare manuscripts, presentations and other documents and communicate the scientific findings with team members and collaborators inside and outside of CDC

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in genetics, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, computational biology, or other area related to the responsibilities of the position
  • Experience with analysis of whole genomic sequencing data generated by Illumina, PacBio and/or Nanopore, genome-based typing systems, and developing bioinformatic tools using languages such as Python, bash scripting, Perl, etc.
  • Proficiency with open source and commercially available software for bioinformatics analysis of next generation sequencing data
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to efficiently organize multiple priorities
  • Skills documenting daily work with good laboratory practice compliance
  • Ability to work and build coalitions with partners involved, and develop strategies for effectively conveying information to partners
  • Ability to work independently and yet to maintain the flexibility to respond to the needs of MVPD Branch
  • Skills and experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts  
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Proficiency with computer software, such as Microsoft Access, and statistical software
  • Experience with the design and implementation of genomic typing systems and novel bioinformatics tools
  • Experience with data management
  • Experience working on international projects
