Emory Office of Research Administration (ORA) facilitates multi-faceted research initiatives in the support of faculty research and scholarship, develops policies to guide the responsible conduct of research, and provides a service-oriented administrative infrastructure to serve the faculty and staff involved in research.

The Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO) engages with the Emory community by managing environmental, health, and safety risks, reducing workplace injuries and illnesses, and reducing environmental impact by delivering professional value-added services and solutions that aid and assist the community. The EHSO vision is a partnership with the Emory community that integrates sound environmental, health, and safety management practices in all aspects of Emory's operations to enhance and support its world-renowned research, inquiry-driven teaching, and the delivery of premier healthcare.

EHSO is currently seeking an individual to join the Research Safety/Biosafety team in the capacity of Research Committee Coordinator. This position will focus on coordinating the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and Research Health and Safety Committee (RHSC) activities. The incumbent also closely works with the Research Safety Director to facilitate research laboratory safety related projects as well as provide support and assistance to other EHSO teams and/or other ORA units.

In addition to the above duties, the EHS III - Research Committee Coordinator will:

• Provide compliance support and manage all business aspects for the IBC and RHSC.

• Evaluate regulations and guidance related to recombinant DNA (rDNA) and biological hazards and apply this guidance to current programs.

• Serve as primary liaison and intermediary between Principal Investigators, their laboratory staff, the EHSO Biosafety group, IBC/RHSC committee and its designated reviewers regarding biological registration submissions.

• Coordinate review of all biological project submissions to the EHSO Biosafety office including those involving pathogenic/infectious agents, rDNA, rDNA associated with human gene transfer clinical trials, Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC), and registrations for work with potential biological hazards.

• Prepare agendas and other meeting/committee associated documentation including annual reports, facilitating monthly IBC/RHSC meetings, draft and finalizing minutes, conduct post-meeting follow-up, and maintain official records of the committee meetings.

• Oversee all facets and steps of the biological registration review process in an electronic lab management platform, including pre-review, assigning Biosafety group and committee designated reviewers, and approving registration submissions.

• Evaluate IBC/RHSC business processes and implementing improvements, including proposing and drafting policies and procedures/SOPs pertaining to committee business and obtaining stakeholder approval.

• Coordinate with other compliance committees as needed for IBC/RHSC business, such as the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and the Office of Research Compliance and Regulatory Affairs (including the Office of Research Integrity and Compliance programs).

• Submit reports and other communications to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Science Policy (OSP) on matters related to Emory's IBCs on behalf of the IBC chair and Biosafety Officer and coordinating any necessary follow-up.

• Develop training tools to aid research and EHSO departmental staff understanding of and compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines and requirements for laboratory safety and biosafety.

• Represent the EHSO Research Safety/Biosafety team to other units and delivering presentations related to laboratory safety and biosafety matters.

• Develop new compliance projects and initiatives related to laboratory safety and biosafety as they arise.

• Identify gaps in data and reporting requirements for review and oversight of areas under the Research Safety program.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
  • Implements and monitors Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs.
  • Ensures compliance with policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations, including receiving, shipping and disposal of hazardous material (biological, chemical, radioactive or other) and samples; conducts surveys and inspections.
  • In coordination with program manager, develops and conducts training programs.
  • Maintains documentation pertaining to the use and disposal of biological, chemical or radioactive materials.
  • May hire, supervise and evaluate staff.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors plus 5 years experience in environmental engineering, public health, occupational health and safety or other appropriate science-related field of study (i.e. chemistry) is required.
  • Professional Board Certification desired.
  • Examples include: CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), CHP (Certified Health Physicist), CSP (Certified Safety Professional), BSP (Biosafety Professional), CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), PE (Professional Engineer), etc.
  • Equivalent combination of experience, education and training is accepted.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master of Science (MS) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)degree with a biology major (i.e., molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, neuroscience, etc.). with a biology major preferred.
  • Prior experience conducting scientific research in an institute of higher education.
  • Experience with IBC, IRB, IACUC, or other biological research review committee.
  • Experience with various technologies including advanced knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite, analyzing, organizing, and managing data.
  • Possess a high level of professionalism and commitment to confidentiality with sound judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students; coupled with demonstrated sensitivity and ability to listen and engage with diverse groups of people.
  • Professional Credentials in Biosafety [i.e., Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP-ABSA), Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP-ABSA), or IFBA Professional Certification (International Federation of Biosafety Associations)].

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
