Job Description: Forensic Scientist / Analytical Chemistry Scientist

Job Function: 

  • Design, execute, and interpret experiments and tests according to company's Technical Procedures and client requests.
  • Analyze data and make and record and report educated and detailed observations in compliance with the principles of ISO 17025, internal and external SOPs and and regulatory requirements of DEA (controlled substances of all schedules) and USDA (e.g., hemp compliance testing program).
  • Solve forensic science and analytical chemistry problems and together with the Avazyme team create innovative, accurate  and reliable test results for our clients (law enforcement, Crime Scene Investigations, DEA Diversion Control, NC and Federal Courts,  NC SBI, FBI, US Department of Homeland Security.
  • Execute customized Technical Procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (e.g., GLP) and perform the daily tasks accurately and reliably at a high quality level (ISO17025:2017) and on time. 
  • Communicate well and in a timely fashion with the Avazyme team, team leaders and study directors, collaborators, and clients.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and validate laboratory equipment and work areas in good working condition.
  • Continuously seek to expand knowledge, read and understand scientific and forensic literature, and be able to quickly learn new techniques, instrumentation, software, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Testify as an Expert Witness in a court of law to support the results and findings of forensic investigations.

Requirements

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with mass spectrometry instruments and bioanalytical data acquisition and processing software (e.g., LabSolutions, Chem Station, Chromeleon, Analyst, statistics software)
  • Prior hands-on experience with Shimadzu mass spectrometers, chromatographs and software preferred.
  • Experience with analytical techniques such as HPLC/UPLC, Gas chromatography, UV/VIS, mass spectrometry, CAD, DSC, ICP-MS
  • Experience with forensic tests, e.g., cannabinoid analysis, opioid screens including metabolites, heavy metals screen, controlled substance screens
  • Experience working with controlled substances under a DEA permit and under ISO 17025:2017 quality standards, with successful proficiency tests for analytical methods in the following areas: active pharmaceutical ingredients, metabolites, man-made toxins and natural toxins, food adulterants, or other man-made or natural small to mid-size molecules.
  • Experience in following proper safety regulations regarding chemicals and biological hazards.
  • A proven track record of the ability to perform method development, method transfer, adaptation, validation (according to published and established test guidelines), and qualification protocols in a timely fashion.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills and Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Well organized and able to multitask with a flexible work schedule (including weekends and holidays depending on client project needs and timelines)
  • Associate Degree in Forensic Science, Analytical Chemistry, B.A. or B.S., or Masters degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry
