Description

The Virginia State Public Health and Environmental Laboratory, the Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS), is one of the largest public consolidated laboratories in the United States. With over 200 scientific and support staff, DCLS provides chemical & microbiological testing services to local, state, and federal regulatory, environmental & public health agencies with the mission to promote a healthier, safer world through quality laboratory service.

We are currently seeking a qualified candidate that is adaptable and will work with integrity to serve as a Senior Scientist for the Environmental and Air Quality testing group area of the Trace Organic, Pesticide Residue and Formulations Group. This lab group area performs moderate to high level complexity analytical testing of environmental waters and air testing to ensure compliance with regulatory statutes supporting the Clean Water and Clean Air Acts for the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Testing includes various Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) methods for using an array of analytical techniques, to include sample extraction, chromatographic and mass spectrometry instrumentation.

In this position you will act as a team lead to prioritize and manage effective workflow of this testing area on a daily basis while also participating as a member of the team performing sample testing. You will assist with the development and validation of new methods, perform and maintain compliance with QA/QC procedures, perform equipment maintenance and troubleshooting as well as ensure accurate record keeping.

Weekend and after-hours work may be required during emergency testing events.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

The applicant must meet the following minimal qualifications for consideration:
  • BS in the Life Sciences or related field or equivalent combination of training and experience and must meet the educational and work experience requirements for laboratory personnel as defined by the appropriate accrediting agency, i.e. CLIA, NELAC, ISO 17025, AIHA, etc.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices for the handling of chemical, microbiological, infectious or toxic materials, as applicable.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in analytical organic chemistry, including quantitative analysis in various matrix preparations.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow standard operating procedures
  • Experience with complex, routine, or emergency organic quantitative analyses using various matrix preparation methods.
  • Skill in the application, operation, and troubleshooting of complex laboratory equipment and instrumentation for the analysis of specimens and reporting of test results.
  • Experience operating mass spectrometry instrumentation.
  • Experience compiling and formulating data, drawing conclusions and providing interpretations of data.
  • Knowledge of QA and QC procedures and how to properly document and interpret QC data. (Including the ability to identify and address laboratory errors.)
  • Experience in a fast-paced, team-centered environment.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills to perform assigned duties
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate, lead, organize and prioritize work of others.
  • Ability to lift and transport 30 pounds
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.



Preferred Qualifications

Preferred work related skills and experience include the following:
  • Advanced Degree in a chemical, physical, biological or medical laboratory science
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of sophisticated and complex computer interfaced chromatography and spectrometry instrumentation specifically (GC, GCMS, LCMS, HPLC, LCMSMS) and laboratory information management systems
  • Experience with development and validation of new methods.
  • Knowledge and experience with ISO 17025 or TNI 2009 standards.
  • Experience in writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and/or grants.
  • Experience serving as a team leader with the ability to prioritize, schedule and coordinate laboratory testing of others.
